This list includes all surface combatants, submarines, mine warfare vessels and patrol craft over 100 tons displacement, and all amphibious ships and auxiliaries over 500 tons displacement. Non-self-propelled craft and non-seagoing vessels are not included.

Ships not yet commissioned, or in long-term overhaul/conversion, are listed in [brackets]. Navigation and surface-search radars are not listed. All classifications are purely unofficial and are based on an attempt to use standard classifications throughout all navies; they may or may not correspond to "official" designations.

Surface Combatants

Fridtjof Nansen (F85) class multirole frigates

Displacement: 5,100 tons full load
Dimensions: 132 x 16.8 x 4.9 meters
Propulsion: 2 cruise diesels, 1 LM2500 boost gas turbine, 2 shafts, 26+ knots
Crew: 120 + 26 spare
Radar: SPY-1F multifunction phased array

Oslo class light frigates

Displacement: 1,950 tons full load
Dimensions: 96.6 x 11.2 x 5.5 meters/317 x 36.8 x 18 knots
Propulsion: Steam turbines, 2 600 psi boilers, 1 shaft, 20,000 hp, 25 knots
Crew: 125
Radar: AWS-9 air search
Sonar: TSM 2633 hull & VDS, Terne III active
Fire Control: 9LV-218 missile control
EW: AR 700 intercept
Armament: 4 Penguin SSM, 8-cell Sea Sparrow SAM, 1 dual 3/50 DP, 1 40 mm, 2 triple 12.75 inch torpedo tubes, Terne III 6-tube ASR RL, DC rack

Concept/Program: General-purpose frigates with an ASW emphasis. Design is based on old US Dealy class. Lead ship of class sank 24 Jan 1994 after grounding. All have been modernized but are due for replacement. Penguin SSM are not always carried.

Submarines

Note: There are plans to acquire four new submarines under the joint Swedish-Norwegian-Danish Viking program.


Ula class coastal submarines

Displacement: 1,150 tons submerged
Dimensions: 59 x 5.4 x 4.6 meters/193.6 x 17.7 x 15.1 feet
Propulsion: Diesel-electric, 2 diesels, 1 shaft, 6,000 hp, 23 knots
Crew: 18-20
Sonar: CSU-83 suite, Sintra flank
Armament: 8 21 inch torpedo tubes (14 torpedoes)

Concept/Program: A joint Norwegian-German project; the combat systems are Norwegian, attack sonar is German, flank sonar is French, hull sections were built in Norway, and the boats were assembled in Germany.

Skjold class missile boats

Concept/Program: High speed SES (Surface Effect Ship) patrol craft. 1st unit is a preproduction boat; others to be built several years later. Skjold is being evaluated by the US Navy.

Concept/Program: Small patrol/missile craft, best suited for inshore waters. The Penguin missiles have not been carried on a regular basis since 1994.
